All About Efflorescence

Efflorescence On Travertine Shower Floor

What is Efflorescence?

Do you have build up in your shower? Not sure what it is or what causes it to keep coming back even after frequent cleaning? It could be a mineral build-up called Efflorescence.

What causes Efflorescence?

Efflorescence occurs when constant moisture reacts with minerals in the natural stone. This typically occurs when there is a leak or cracked grout lines that cause the surface to constantly maintain moisture. This reaction causes a buildup of minerals that is hard to get rid of. It starts in one spot and spreads out as it grows. It can not only damage tiles, but can get harder to remove and causes more damage if not taken care of properly. Since efflorescence penetrates the stone, it causes discoloration and can eat away at the grout as well, which can make the tiles come loose with time.

How to get rid of Efflorescence?

In order to completely get rid of Efflorescence, a deep cleaning is required, this is because it creates a hard layer that is attached to the stone. While it can be removed with strong chemicals, this would damage the natural stone, which is why professional deep cleaning is needed on the natural stone. Deep cleaning removes all efflorescence from the stone and the grout is removed and replaced with new grout. The longer the efflorescence stays on the stone, it can cause discoloration on the stone. Unfortunately, the efflorescence is most likely to return if there are any unfixed leaks and cracked grout lines.

How do I prevent Efflorescence?

Once efflorescence is properly removed through professional deep cleaning, you do not need to worry about preventing efflorescence if all leaks have been repaired. Otherwise, get leaks repaired and make sure that the shower dries out between uses by allowing for proper ventilation.
