Rust Stains
All About Rust Stains
Rust stains can form on countertops, floors, and showers. Rust forms through the oxidation process when certain metals come in contact with oxygen. Metals such as iron, copper, and zinc are common around countertops, floors, and showers because these metals are found in shower and kitchen plumbing, decorative objects, and containers that are placed on natural stone. Over time, the constant contact between these metals and air and water, allow for oxidation, which appears in brown, yellow or orange stains.
Is it possible to remove rust stains from natural stone?
Removing rust stains depends on the state of the stain. There are some stains that have formed for a long time and have created a permanent discoloration in the stone. These stains may lighten when trying to remove them but may not be completely erased. On the other hand, when the stain is beginning to form and is treated early, there is a greater possibility of erasing it completely.
How to prevent the formation of rust stains
Repair any leaks in the pipes or faucets to prevent constant moisture from oxidizing the metals and transferring that oxidation to the stone.
Replace damaged silicone or caulk at the joints to prevent water from pooling in those areas and making it difficult to dry.
Repair any cracks in the grout lines and seal them.
Make sure the iron levels in the water are not too high.
Do not leave objects that contain iron, copper, or zinc directly in contact with the stone.
Use rust-resistant metals such as stainless steel in shower glass supports.
Make sure showers have good ventilation.
Seal the stone and grout-lines every 1 to 2 years.
