When do I need to repolish my granite countertops?

If your granite countertops no longer look shiny, and you have tried cleaning them but aren’t able to achieve the original shine, it’s time to consider polishing and sealing them again.

What is the process of polishing granite countertops like?

The work area is protected, and a deep cleaning is done to the countertops. Then the polishing begins, by using a polishing machine and applying a polishing cream. A shine is produced on the countertops by combining the cream with the rotation movements of the machine and the heat generated by the friction. Once the polishing is finished, the countertops are cleaned once again to remove the residue from the polishing cream. The surface is then neutralized and is left to dry. Once the countertop is dry, it is time to apply the sealer.

When do I need to resurface my granite countertops?

If the granite countertops have not only lost their shine, but also have scratches and worn spots from using abrasive cleaning materials or from being a high-use area, it is necessary to resurface it.

What is the process of resurfacing like?

The work area is protected, and the technician will do an evaluation of the scratches to decide which grit of diamond pads will be needed to remove the scratches and worn areas. When the technician starts working, they will use a polishing machine and apply water to lubricate the diamond pad to not create dust in the process. This first step erases the finish of the countertops, the scratches, and worn areas. Then the technician will use various grits of diamond pads, each less aggressive, to achieve a smoother and shinier surface with each grit. After finishing the resurfacing process, the surface is polished, neutralized, and lastly, sealed.

It’s important to mention that on many occasions, granite countertops only have damage that needs resurfacing in a small area and not on the whole countertop. If this is the case, only this specific area needs to be resurfaced, polished and sealed.
