Etching on Marble
Etching
What is Etching?
Etching is a chemical burn that occurs when an acidic substance reacts with the calcium carbonate that is present in the marble. Since etching is a chemical burn, in order to remove them from the stone, the restoration process must be realized, this includes honing the stone, polishing it, and then sealing it.
How do I identify an Etch?
Etching is normally lighter than the natural stone's color. You can also feel a difference on the surface of the stone because the stone's finish feels rough where the etching is.
How do I prevent etching?
In order to prevent etching, it is important to protect your stone from acidic substances. Do not clean your countertop with bleach, vinegar, or other cleaners, instead, use a neutral ph or alkaline cleaner. Be careful with substances like citrus, alcohol, and soda as they can cause etching if not cleaned immediately!

Stains
What is a Stain?
A stain is a discoloration on the stone that occurs when residue is left by a substance that has penetrated the stone. Stains can be cleaned with a stain cleaner and proper cleaning.
How do I identify a Stain?
Stains are normally darker than the natural stone's color and it looks like the stone is wet where the stain is. Compared to an etch mark, the finish of the stone will feel smooth where there is a stain.
How do I prevent Stains?
The best way to prevent stains is by protecting your stone! Make sure to have your stone sealed properly, this keeps it from absorbing substances. It is also important to clean up spills immediately, protect your countertop while cooking, and use the correct cleaners! Be careful with substances like coffee, cooking oils, wine, sodas, and fizzy drinks. Make sure to dry around the sink as this area is prone to rust stains.
