Importance of Sealer
Sealing your natural stone
Sealing natural stone helps protect it from substances that it may come in contact with, specifically absorbing liquids and preventing stains. By properly sealing your stone every two or three years, you can keep it looking new and prolong the life of the stone.
Why do I need a sealer?
Sealer is a clear substance that is poured over the tile, countertop, floor, or other stone surface. Since all stones have a different porosity, the sealer closes the pores of natural stones and coats the surface with a thin layer that protects it. Making sure your stone is properly sealed is the best thing you can do for it.
What does sealer do?
Sealer offers protection against stains and ultraviolet lights. Some are anti-graffiti, improve color tone, and repel oil, water, and dissolved salts.
While sealer protects your stone from stains, it is important to note that it makes the stone stain-resistant, not stain-proof. This is because the sealer prevents the substance from penetrating the stone quickly, giving you time to clean up the spill before it penetrates and becomes a stain.
It is also easier to clean a sealed stone because dirt and grime are more easily wiped away with the protective coating of a sealer.
What does sealer not do?
While sealer can make your stone stain resistant, it does not protect against etching. Be careful with acidic substances like vinegar, coffee, wine, and citrus because these can burn your stone, even if it is sealed. This is due to the presence of calcium carbonate in most natural stones, except for granite, which reacts with the acidic substance.
Sealer does not protect against scratches, traffic patterns, dullness or other damage.
What kind of sealer do I need?
There are different kinds of sealers, such as water-based and solvent-based, and for interiors or exteriors. Impregnating sealers are most commonly used, and known as penetrating sealers. They are water-based because they protect the stone by penetrating the stone below the surface but still allow the surface to "breathe" while protecting it. Topical sealers are another option but are not recommended as they do not protect the stone well.
